Back pain can be one of the most irritating kinds of all pains in your body. The problem with back ache is that you just can’t station yourself for long in one specific position or posture. The most common treatment tips and remedies given for back pain are exercise advices, some oral medications and advices for good postures. But nowadays, more and more people are going in for massage therapy treatment for their back pain, which is becoming increasingly popular to combat back pain and even stress.
What research shows?
A study on massage and back pain conducted at the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami, 2001 showed that massage reduced lower back pain, anxiety and depression besides aiding a good sleep. The study was publishes in the International Journal of Neuroscience.
How to give a back massage
- Let the recipient lie on his stomach on a comfortable surface. The giver should be able to access the entire region of the recipient’s back without straining his own back
- Begin by applying pressure using the thumb simultaneously on either sides of the spine
- Take the required quantity of oil in a cupped and rub it between both hands to make it warm. Apply the oil evenly on the middle and lower back to the hips using long, gliding strokes
- Place one hand over the other. Using circular movements with both palms thus, apply gentle pressure by moving towards the recipient’s head, but do not cross the backbone.
- When you reach the lower ribs, do the palm circling on the sides. Repeat this cycle 3-4 times
- Gently massage the shoulder joints to enhance blood flow.
