The history of aromatherapy can be traced back to the ancient times. Human beings have been using aromatics in their daily life from AD 3500. The use of aromatics has been the part of the human civilizations across the world.
The ancient Egyptians, Greeks, Persians and Indians were aware of the magical properties of the aromatics. Hippocrates, the father of medicine, had done research on the medicinal qualities of the herbs and used these for treatment.
The Aroma Therapy in Modern Times
French chemist Rene-Maurice Gattefosse(1881-1950) coined the term ‘aromatherapy in 1928. Once he accidentally found that lavender oil could heal slight burns and associated pain. This discovery prompted Rene to do more research on medicinal properties of oils and he came up with innovative theories. His researches eventually led him to the publication of his path breaking book titled, ‘Aromathérapie: Les Huiles essentielles hormones vegetales’, in French.
Renes’ works prompted many enthusiasts to practise and do research on the curative properties of aromatherapy. Many aromatherapists continued their research on the medicinal qualities and soothing effects of aromatics and contributed to the growing knowledge on aromatherapy. They started applying their knowledge of the healing effects of the aromatics, and the result was the popularity of aromatherapy among the folks.
Aromatherapy-Return to the Essence of Nature
Nowadays, aromatherapy has gained the status of a true holistic healing system. The aromatherapy centers and clinics have mushroomed around the world. Along with the global drive of ‘return to nature’, the people around the world started using the naturalistic healing system.
Books on Aromatherapy
Many books had come out during the early twentieth century from different parts of the world, unfolding the magical properties of the aromatics. ‘Art of Aroma Therapy’ is the first book on aromatherapy in English language, written by an English aroma therapist Robert b. Tisserand in 1977. ‘Health Through God’s Pharmac’ is another classic book on the healing powers of herbs.
