The Esalen Massage is focuses more on the body as a whole, and tries to tone the entire body, mind and spirit while also helping the patient to live more happily in his or her own body.
Technique used in Esalen Massage:
During an Esalen massage therapy session, the patient remains nude, draped with a towel. The massage therapist usually dresses with informal clothes. The therapist applies long flowing soft strokes through the body combined with a variety of techniques from many other forms of massage, as well. Each session is different, because they are based on patient’s reactions (physically and verbally).

- Passive joint movements confirm the sensation of spaciousness in the body.
- A helpful relation between patient and massage therapist encourages the patient to willfully sense into himself, resulting in a fuller breath and a deeply energized and relaxed state.
Precautions to be maintained in Esalen Massage:
Before attending a session of Esalen Massage, it is important to consult a doctor and take his permission as to whether you can go in for the massage in the following conditions:
- Pregnancy
- High blood pressure or heart problems
- Cancer
- Phlebitis or thrombosis
- Open and unhealed sores or wounds as well as inflamed or bruised areas.
